Current Affairs

As the chairman, I have to something special to make the class more participative. Hahas. But now I need to talk about the content. So I did a powerpoint and there was a timer in each slider to time the panelists. So it turned out to be..... quite fine.

Current Affairs Panel Discussion II:

Sports in Schools: Just a game?
Chairman: Liu Du Kai Ying
The Big News- “What happened?”

Repercussions

The Discussion
Panelists can discuss what the role of sports and competitions in schools should be, and about the current state of school sports.
Panelists can also refer to the recent incidents and discuss the implications of these incidents and what they mean for schools and students and debate over:
whether these are isolated /one-off incidents
if they are symptomatic of larger problems in the system.

Flow

Rules & Regulations
Every panelist is given 3 to 5 minutes to talk.
There will be a timer on the slide to remind the panelist.
When his time is up, I will ask him to sit down and invite the next speaker to speak, regardless of whether he had wrapped up his speech.
The class should maintain silence when the panelists are speaking.
No questions will be entertained from the student assessors during open discussion.
There is no fixed stand for any panelist., the panelist are focusing on their point of view as different characters.

CLEAR? LET’S START…

Concerned Parent
(Jonathan Tan)

Stand-

Worried about safety issues, believes that safety standards need to be tightened. Supports efforts to make school sports less competitive and less dangerous, but still wants child to be able to pick up sporting values.

Professional Coach
(Zhao
Junning)

Stand-

While regretting the latest incidents, feels that current safety standards are sufficient and that the accidents couldn't have been prevented. Believes that the 'must win' mentality is not to blame and that it's good to be competitive.

School sports player
(Gabriel
Leow)

Stand-

Feels that current safety practices could be better enforced and tightened in order to better safeguard the players. At the same time, he does not want regulations to go too far in restricting sport activities until they stifle fun and free play; some level of risk must be accepted.

Teacher-coach (Poh Wei Suen)

Stand-

Feels that the most important factor in reducing accidents is not in more regulations but rather in educating students about fair play and inculcating values of sportsmanship. Over-regulation, by preventing students from failing on their own, can prevent them from learning these values. At the same time, feels that teachers in best position to achieve this, not professional coaches.

Injured Sportsman
(Ho Chung Xian)

Stand-

Has suffered injuries before due to lax safety procedures and over-enthusiastic competitors, hence supports stricter regulations and enforcement. Wants sports in schools to become casual affairs and reduce number of competitions.

Sports Champion (Daryl Lim)

Stand-

Very competitive; wants school sports to continue to be an arena where athletes can challenge each other, feels that main role of sports in schools is to train athletes to win competitions. Supports professional coaching.

Sports fan (Vincent Tay)

Stand-

Wants sports in schools to be engaging and entertaining, and to make students interested in sports. Therefore feels that schools and athletes should not prize winning above the sport itself, but recognizes that some competitive element must exist. Feels that maintaining safety is fundamental to making sport enjoyable.
Local educated layperson (Gabriel Chua)
Stand
Feels that the primary goal of sports in schools is to keep students active and to teach them sportsmanship, teamwork and other values. Believes that either professional or teacher-coaches can achieve this, provided there is support from other areas. Medals should only be seen as a means to an end.
